CAP Media Briefing: Pathology and AI

NORTHFIELD, Ill. (June 27, 2023) —The College of American Pathologists (CAP) hosted a virtual media briefing on Thursday, June 22. Panelists discussed Artificial Intelligence (AI), its impact on the pathology profession today, and what the future may look like across the pathologist landscape.

“We really need to be thinking of this as a tool that a physician uses,” said CAP President Emily E. Volk, MD, FCAP. “Just like pathologists use microscopes, we're now incorporating this additional tool into our workflows.”

The briefing included questions and answers with CAP experts. Briefing highlights included a group discussion on:
•    What exactly is Artificial Intelligence (AI)?
•    What is the role of AI in the pathology practice – from testing to diagnosis of disease? Will AI replace pathologists?
•    What does AI mean for community pathologists and possibly rural hospitals?
•    What is the vision ahead given the crowded “noise” around AI right now and especially when it comes to pathology?
