Mary Edgerton, MD, PhD, FCAP

Mary E. Edgerton, MD, PhD, FCAP is currently a Professor in the Department of Pathology, Microbiology, and Immunology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. As a Marshall Scholar to the United Kingdom Mary E. Edgerton completed a PhD in Biophysics and then worked for eleven years in academic and corporate research. Subsequently, Dr. Edgerton attended medical school at the Medical College of Pennsylvania (now Drexell College of Medicine) followed by Anatomic & Clinical Pathology Residency and Surgical Pathology Fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania. She has worked as a breast pathologist and pathology informatician at Vanderbilt University, H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center, and the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, where she also worked with the Susan Komen and Pink Ribbon Red Ribbon Foundations to address issues in cancer diagnosis faced by low- and middle-income resource countries. Dr. Edgerton is on the CAP Information Technology Leadership Committee and previously served as Chair of the CAP PERT Committee, Chair of the Informatics Cluster for and as a member of the Council on Scientific Affairs, member of the Council on Informatics and Pathology Innovation, and junior member of the Informatics Committee. A common thread in her research has been the collection of and quality assurance in data and biospecimens, mathematical modeling of processes, coding computer simulations of these processes, and pattern analysis using machine learning and artificial intelligence. She is boarded as a Clinical Informatician in addition to AP & CP and specializes in Breast Pathology.

Dr. Edgerton can speak on breast pathology, biomarkers in cancer, cancer synoptic reporting, cancer pathology, biospecimen banking for use in research and treatment, and global issues faced by low and middle income countries  pertaining to cancer diagnosis and treatment, along with informatics topics including data quality particularly as it pertains to public health, computational pathology, and the use of artificial intelligence in medicine.
