Amy Karger, MD, PhD, FCAP

Amy Karger, MD, PhD, FCAP, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at the University of Minnesota. She received her MD and PhD degrees from the Mayo Clinic, and completed her residency and fellowship training in clinical pathology and clinical chemistry at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Karger is a recognized leader in the field of laboratory medicine, currently serving in a leadership role with the College of American Pathologists as Chair of the Point of Care Testing Committee. She also has held numerous leadership roles with the American Association of Clinical Chemistry, and is a Vice President and Chair of the Credentials Committee for the American Board of Clinical Chemistry. Dr. Karger has extensive experience directing or co-directing central laboratory testing for large clinical trials and multi-institutional research studies, including the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI), Preventing Early Renal Loss in Diabetes (PERL) study and the Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications (EDIC) study. She is also program director for the University of Minnesota COVID-19 Serological Sciences Network Capacity Building Center, which is currently focused on conducting a large COVID-19 vaccine response study in immunocompromised individuals. At the University of Minnesota, Dr. Karger’s primary clinical duties involve directing the University of Minnesota Masonic Children Hospital’s clinical laboratories, the biochemical genetics laboratory, and serving as director for point-of-care testing for the MHealth Fairview system.
