Nakashima, MD, FCAP; Olga Pozdnyakova, MD, PhD, FCAP; and Adam Cloe, MD, PhD, FCAP; discuss the most important blood test for multiple myeloma. “The serum, or clear liquid part of the blood, is separated from the blood cells by spinning the sample quickly in a centrifuge,” Dr. Nakashima explains. “Traditional SPEPs are done in semi-solid gel material, which is laid flat in a device with electrodes at each end. The laboratory scientist loads a small amount of each serum sample into an indentation in the gel.”
