College of American Pathologists Inaugurates Diana Marcella Cardona, MD, MBA, FCAP as a Governor of the Board

CHICAGO, Ill– Diana Marcella Cardona, MD, MBA, FCAP, was inaugurated as a governor of the board of the College of American Pathologists (CAP) at the organization’s annual meeting in Chicago on October 7th.

“As a member of the board of governors, I will work to ensure that pathology not only survives but thrives in meeting the needs of our patients and our members,” stated Dr. Cardona. “I look forward to assisting in the development and implementation of a strategy that enables our profession and health care system to overcome the challenges we continue to face. I flourish in settings where my input brings value and where we can effect change through thoughtful dialogue and, ultimately, action.”

Pathologist Leader Focused on Advocacy, Innovation

Dr. Cardona has served on many CAP committees, councils, and task forces. Currently, she most recently served as the chair of the Quality and Clinical Data Registry Affairs Committee and a member of the Council on Government and Professional Affairs and Council on Informatics and Pathology Innovation, and a NC Delegate to the House of Delegates.

Dr. Cardona’s contributions to her profession have been recognized throughout her career through the many honors and awards. Most recently, in 2020, she received the CAP’s Outstanding Communicator Award and in 2016 the CAP’s Public Service Award. At Duke, her leadership and mentorship were recognized with being bestowed the Salvatore Pizzo Faculty Research Mentor Award and selection for the Chancellor’s Clinical Leadership in Academic Medicine Program.

Dr. Cardona received her medical degree from Miami Miller School of Medicine in Miami, Florida and her MBA from Duke Fuqua School of Business Executive Program in Durham, North Carolina. She completed her residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and her fellowship in Gastrointestinal and Hepatobiliary Pathology from the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. She is currently affiliated with Duke Health and Duke School of Medicine in Durham, North Carolina, where she is an Associate Professor of Pathology with Tenure, Vice Chair and Director of Anatomic Pathology Laboratories and the Associate Medical Director of Duke Health Clinical Laboratories.
