CAP Press Releases New Guide to Whole Blood Viscoelastic Assays

NORTHFIELD, Ill. (November 6, 2023) — Whole Blood Viscoelastic Assays in Clinical Diagnosis: An illustrated case-based guide, released this fall from the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Press, is a comprehensive and visually appealing resource for viscoelastic testing and result interpretation.  Recent advancements in next-generation viscoelastic assays (VEA) have made it possible to perform these blood tests at the patient’s bedside, leading to a broader range of clinical applications and better understanding of the results within context to the patient’s medical history.

The newly released publication on whole blood VEA guides readers through hemostasis physiology, conventional assays for assessment, and therapeutic agents used in patient management. “The primary objective of this book is to offer a thorough yet succinct manual to individuals engaged in viscoelastic testing,” said the book’s editor, Oksana Volod, MD, FCAP, professor of pathology and director of the coagulation consultative service, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

“My fascination with VEA traces back to my residency, where I completed an elective rotation in coagulation at the Royal Free Hospital in London, renowned as one of Europe’s largest hemophilia centers,” shared Dr. Volod. “It was during this period that I was first introduced to VEA, specifically thromboelastography (TEG). Subsequently, I invested a substantial amount of time and effort over the course of 20 years to acquire an in-depth understanding of various VEAs and their applications.”

The book was created by a team of authors consisting of current and former members of the CAP Hemostasis and Thrombosis Committee and covers a range of topics such as comprehending hemostasis, the practical application, and the interpretation of VEA across diverse clinical settings. This book caters to a broad audience, including pathologists, clinicians, laboratory scientists, perfusionists, nurses, as well as trainees who depend on viscoelastic testing for patient care and decision-making.

This book is a comprehensive yet concise tool that allows readers to refresh their knowledge of hemostasis, explained Dr. Volod. “Readers will be able to comprehend the FDA-approved and off-label clinical applications of their chosen VEA, and learn how to interpret different VEA results within the context of a patient’s medical history,” she added.

The 342-page book is available for $120 (members and laboratory customers receive 20% off list price). See sample pages and order details at estore.cap.org.
