CAP Launches 21 New Proficiency Testing and External Quality Assessment Programs for 2026

Northfield, Ill. (October 20, 2025) — The first globally available HIV-1/HIV-2 molecular detection and differentiation program will be offered to laboratories in 2026, alongside 20 other new proficiency testing (PT) and external quality assessment (EQA) materials. The expanded menu includes several first-of-their-kind offerings in microbiology, transfusion medicine, and instrumentation verification tools.

“The CAP has announced today the first program of its kind to market globally for HIV-1/HIV-2 detection and differentiation using molecular methods,” said CAP President Qihui “Jim” Zhai, MD, FCAP. “These innovative PT/EQA programs give laboratories the tools they need to deliver accurate, reliable patient care.”

In addition to HIV-1/HIV-2, the CAP introduced the first US-based PT program for detecting and accurately identifying the H5N1 strain of avian influenza. The CAP continues to offer worldwide PT programs such as:

  • Red Blood Cell Antigen Typing – Automated (ARCT)
  • Weak RHD Genotyping (WRHG)

Furthermore, it is the first US-based provider to offer a standalone program for Dengue Virus Serology (DENS).

Beyond proficiency testing, the CAP introduced a new quality improvement tool, Reticulocyte Calibration Verification and Linearity, to help identify any analytical measurement range (AMR) changes that could result in inaccurate results. “These new programs not only address critical diagnostic challenges but also advance laboratory quality worldwide,” Dr. Zhai added. “From transfusion safety to infectious disease detection, each program supports better outcomes for patients.”
