CAP Focuses on AI NGS in Pathology at Dubai Laboratory Practices Seminar

Northfield, Ill. (February 5, 2024) – As the market leader for laboratory accreditation in the Middle East, the College of American Pathologists (CAP) hosted a Laboratory Practices Seminar in partnership with Dubai Health on February 4, 2024.

The Dubai Laboratory Practices Seminar offered educational opportunities in risk management, next-generation sequencing, artificial intelligence, point-of-care testing, and safety compliance. It also gave guests a chance to gather insights from valued leaders in pathology, including CAP President Donald S. Karcher, MD, FCAP and Dubai Health Leader Rana Nabulsi, PhD, MSc, GEMBA, FACHE, CPHQ, SSGB.

"The CAP continues to provide laboratory professionals worldwide with the best education and resources, unparalleled connections, and networking with its members to further the goals and meet the needs of all pathologists, clinical laboratories, and the patients we serve,” said Dr. Karcher.

In examining technological advances, the CAP led courses on “Validation of Next-Generation Sequencing-Based Tests for Clinical Applications” and “Navigating the Future of Pathology with AI.” As mentioned in the CAP Board of Governors Policy on AI, these tools have the potential to complement and augment the diagnostic capabilities of pathologists. AI may present both significant opportunities and substantial, evolving challenges for the field of pathology and has the potential to affect the way pathologists practice medicine.

The CAP’s Laboratory Accreditation Program has earned a worldwide reputation for excellence in setting a high bar with an exclusive focus on laboratory medicine and pathology. Laboratories in the Middle East are the first laboratories outside the US to advance their practice through additional accreditation programs in Forensic Drug Testing and Reproductive Laboratory Accreditation. Since 2020 four laboratories in the Middle East have been accredited in Forensic Drug Testing and six laboratories have been accredited in Reproductive Laboratory Medicine.

“The Dubai Laboratory Practices Seminar has provided valuable insight in laboratory excellence and the future of pathology through technology,” explained Dr. Nabulsi. “This insight gives our laboratories in the Middle East a competitive advantage to healthcare providers, patients, and regulatory institutions that our laboratories exceed stringent quality standards.” Dr. Karcher noted “We are honored to contribute valuable insights into laboratory excellence through Education Day, in collaboration with Dubai Health, for our pathologist colleagues and laboratory professionals to better the health of patients in the Middle East."

MEDLAB Middle East will take place February 5th – 8th at the Dubai International Convention & Exhibition Centre in Dubai. The CAP will host a booth located in Za’abeel Hall 5, Booth #Z5. F20
