"A key similarity between the diseases was that both had spread under the radar before being detected," says Dr. Pritt. "Monkeypox is likely to prove much easier to control because it was mostly being spread through sexual contact with infectious skin lesions, whereas the other is ‘indiscriminately’ transmitted by mosquitoes."
