Medical Practice Managers Invited to Free, Collaborative Webinar
Northfield, IL—In a first for both organizations, the College of American Pathologist's (CAP) Practice Management unit and the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA), Englewood, CO, collaborate to deliver a complimentary one-hour webinar "Communicating Harmful Pathology Errors to Treating Clinicians and Patients," November 15, 2016, at 1:00 pm ET.
Pathologist and CAP Practice Management committee member Suzanne M. Dintzis, MD, PhD, FCAP, associate professor of pathology, University of Washington Medical Center, Seattle, will present.
"Critical communications among physicians face new risks and challenges," Dr. Dintzis explains. "For example, to track-down a treating physician, texting is an option, but if you start communicating patient information, you are entering new realms of risk, and HIPPA compliance is just the beginning."
The recent Institute of Medicine report on diagnostic errors encourages physicians to communicate more openly following medical errors. But few on the clinical team are typically familiar with pathologists' attitudes about disclosing pathology and laboratory errors that could cause harm to their colleagues, treating clinicians and patients.
Participants in the CAP-MGMA webinar will gain insight into communication barriers and the ethics of error disclosure. Participants can earn ACMPE, AAPC, CPE and CEU credits are a fee limited to the live webinar. Otherwise, registration is free and an on-demand version will be available.
